David is on the run from Saul and his men. When Saul enters the cave that David and his men are hiding in, David decides to cut the the coat of the king. Immediately afterwards, David falls under conviction.
As Christians, God gives us free will to decide for ourselves what to do. We don’t always make the right choices, and when we don’t He lets us know through conviction. David’s sin was not great, but it was still a sin. The sin came between David and God, and David immediately knew that he needed to repent and ask forgiveness, not only from God, but from Saul, whom he had wronged.
