Church Discipline

Our series, “Corinthians” continues on as we take a look at church discipline. During this time in the Corinthian church, there was a certain man among the congregation who was having an affair with his stepmother. Instead of separating themselves from the open sin, the congregation brags about their acceptance of his sin. Paul immediately explains to the church what they must do in order to stop this sin from spreading and to get back on the right path with God.

In today’s society, Christians are often too accepting of sin within their congregation. They don’t want to ‘offend’ anyone on the outside. We are called to mourn sin within our churches, not celebrate it. What Paul explains to the Corinthians is that as Christians, we need to separate ourselves from the sin within our congregation and pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Paul also says that if our brothers and sisters in Christ do change their ways and repent of their sin, we are to welcome them back with open arms. Church discipline is a necessary part of being a member of any church, and an important part of our walk with God as a Christian.
