This sermon in our Wednesday night series, “Corinthians,” delves deeper into the sin of division among the church. At this point in the Corinthian church, many brothers and sisters in Christ had begun to fight with each other, and often, these fights would result in one side turning to the law and taking the disagreement before a judge.
In chapter 6, Paul has to address this sin of division among brothers and sisters in the church by opening their eyes. Jesus commanded that we live peaceably among each other, not air our dirty laundry in front of the world. As Christians, if one of our brothers and sisters in Christ wrongs us within the church, we are to bring it before the church to make a decision of how to handle the situation. Paul reminds us that we have the promise of someday ruling with Christ. If we can rule alongside Jesus, why can’t we rule over small matters among ourselves? As Christians, it is our responsibility to someday judge angels, so why shouldn’t we be capable of judging issues such as these? As Christians, we are washed clean and blemish free thanks to the blood of Christ. The outside world is not clean, nor do they follow God’s word. Why should we trust an unclean person to make the right decision for us, when we have compassionate brothers and sisters in Christ that we should be looking to for these matters?
